Dark and Light

Darkness was a curious concept when you thought about it. An absolute lack of any Light paired with the duality of the two. Darkness could not exist without Light and Light could not shine bright without Darkness. The two are in a perpetual chase, struggling to see who will catch who first. Light is lazy and slow, oozing over valley and through window panes. It trickles through the smallest gaps in a rainy sky and is present even when Dark through the Moon’s Light. Darkness is quick and sharp. It does not emerge slowly but rushes like a torrent to reclaim areas from the Light and to fill the gaps in the world.

The two are in a perpetual chase, that much is true, but it is not a chase born of anger, nor of arrogance. It is a chase born of love. Light keeps its slow amble towards the heels of Dark as it retreats, trying as it might to hopefully catch a glimpse of it this time. Dark with the haste it is known for dashes after Light, attempting to embrace it before it disappears again. The two are in a perpetual chase that is destined to last forevermore as Dark cannot touch Light and Light cannot catch Dark. For this to occur would upset the very balance of the world.

However, there was a time, many centuries ago where the rules were broken. Darkness ever sharp in its wit and fleet of foot realized what Light could not. If Darkness for a moment, reversed its path it could catch a glimpse of the ever-present warmth it felt behind it.

“Yes” it said, “this is what I must do.”

So, Darkness turned away from its duties and ran as fast as it could back to embrace Light. Light finally able to see that which it had chased for so long rushed to meet it. The two met in an embrace that turned the sky of the world so many different colours.

No words were exchanged between the two. There was no need for them, they both finally understood what it meant to be whole. They were to remain this way forever.

Sadly, it was not fated to be. For the balance of the world was broken. Light and Dark had broken the cycle and the world suffered for it. Crops stopped growing, animals couldn’t understand, and the people of the world stared at the sky with growing fear.

So, it was with great reluctance the two separated. Darkness sped off towards the tail of Light and Light motivated by their embrace chased after the fleeing dark. The chase began again as it always must for as long as the world exists Dark cannot touch Light and Light cannot catch Dark.
